Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
