A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
