The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
