EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
