Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official said the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
