A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
